What is Mistletoe Therapy?

Mistletoe Therapy is an integrative cancer treatment utilizing extracts from Viscum album, a plant native to Europe and Western Asia, to bolster the body’s natural defenses and promote healing. This therapy has been used medicinally for centuries and has broad applications in oncology.

Widely used in Europe, Mistletoe Therapy has shown promise in improving quality of life, reducing side effects of conventional treatments, and potentially slowing tumor growth. It can be used for both malignant and non-malignant tumors, stimulating bone marrow activity and offsetting side effects of chemotherapy and radiation.

At WOW Wellness Center, our expert healthcare providers work closely with you to develop a personalized Mistletoe Therapy protocol that complements your overall cancer treatment plan, supporting your body’s natural healing processes.

Research Supporting Mistletoe Therapy

Recent Clinical Trial Shows Promise for Intravenous Mistletoe Extract in Cancer Treatment

A groundbreaking Phase I clinical trial conducted at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center has provided valuable insights into the potential benefits of intravenous mistletoe extract (Helixor M) for cancer therapy. This study, the first of its kind in the United States, aimed to establish safe dosing guidelines and evaluate the treatment’s efficacy.

Key findings include:

The trial determined a maximum tolerable dose of 600 milligrams of mistletoe extract, administered intravenously three times per week.

Patients reported improved quality of life, and some experienced disease control, with five participants showing stable disease for an average of 15 weeks.

Side effects were generally manageable, with fatigue, nausea, and chills being the most common.

These promising results pave the way for further research into mistletoe extract as a complementary treatment for cancer, potentially offering patients an additional option to enhance their quality of life and support their overall cancer care.

How does Mistletoe Therapy support the body?

Activates the immune system

PEMF therapy works at the cellular level to stimulate the body's natural healing processes, promoting faster recovery from injuries, reducing inflammation, and alleviating pain. By enhancing cellular communication and optimizing cellular function, PEMF therapy supports overall health and well-being, helping you feel your best from the inside out.

Promotes cancer cell death and inhibits tumor growth

Mistletoe extract stimulates programmed cell death (apoptosis) in cancer cells and blocks angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels that feed tumors). This dual action helps to control tumor growth and spread.

Protects healthy cells during conventional treatments

Mistletoe therapy can protect and stabilize the DNA of healthy cells against damage caused by cytostatic drugs, such as those used in chemotherapy. This protective effect may help reduce the side effects of conventional cancer treatments.

Improves overall well-being and quality of life

Patients undergoing Mistletoe Therapy often report significant improvements in their quality of life. Benefits include reduced fatigue (especially during and after chemotherapy), decreased nausea, improved appetite and sleep, increased energy, and less sensitivity to pain. Many patients also experience a more positive outlook, increased courage, and reduced fear.

How does Mistletoe Therapy support the body?

Activates the immune system

Mistletoe therapy stimulates the immune system and boosts the production of defense cells. The active compounds in mistletoe, particularly lectins, have been shown to increase the activity of immune cells, enhancing the body’s ability to combat cancer cells.

  • Mistletoe therapy involves the use of extracts from the mistletoe plant (Viscum Album), which is known for its medicinal properties. This therapy is used in the treatment of both malignant and non-malignant tumors, alongside conventional cancer treatments.

  • Mistletoe extracts are typically administered through subcutaneous injections near the site of the tumor or into the abdomen. In some specialized cases, it may also be administered intravenously under medical supervision.

  • Mistletoe therapy is known to stimulate bone marrow activity, alleviate side effects from chemotherapy and radiation like nausea and loss of appetite, reduce tumor-related pain, and decrease the risk of tumor recurrence.

  • Yes, mistletoe therapy has been used safely in conjunction with conventional cancer treatments for many years. It is one of the most well-studied integrative cancer therapies, particularly in Europe.

  • Mistletoe therapy is suitable for patients undergoing treatment for both malignant and non-malignant tumors. However, a healthcare professional should always be consulted before beginning any new treatment to ensure it is appropriate for the patient’s specific condition.

  • Mistletoe therapy has been shown to improve the quality of life for many cancer patients by reducing treatment side effects and enhancing overall well-being. It is not a standalone treatment but is used to support traditional cancer therapies.

  • In Europe, mistletoe therapy is a common adjunct to conventional cancer treatments, with 75-85% of all cancer patients utilizing this therapy at some point during their illness.

  • Mistletoe therapy is not a cure for cancer but is used to support the body during conventional treatment. It helps improve quality of life and may impact overall treatment outcomes positively.

  • Mistletoe therapy can be started early, even immediately after diagnosis or before surgery or other conventional interventions. Since mistletoe therapy increases regulation of the immune system and reduces side effects of most conventional treatments it will reduce the stress that these interventions cause to the organism. A later start is also possible. It can also be used after a remission to improve immune regulation and resilience.

  • Yes, because mistletoe therapy can reduce the adverse effects of chemo- radio-, hormone or immune-therapy. However, it is essential to ensure that the injection is given outside the radiation or surgical field, in the case that the skin becomes inflamed. We usually advise holding mistletoe the day before and/or the day after conventional treatments. There may be specific indications to dose on the same day as treatments due to synergy in achieving apoptosis but this should be approved by your provider.

  • Not directly. The tumor markers change depending on the course of the disease. If the general condition improves or the tumor size reduces as a result of mistletoe therapy, the tumor markers may also decrease again.

  • Yes, because mistletoe therapy can improve quality of life and strengthen the immune system, which may be manifested, for example, in an increase in appetite and weight, better moods and outlook, normalization of sleep quality and improved vitality and sense of health. Mistletoe with constitutional anthroposophic remedies, targeted herbal adaptogens and nutritional supplementation can improve quality of life and prevent or treat side effects of conventional treatments and the cancer itself significantly.

  • Clinical experience and research say often it does help. Mistletoe therapy may reduce the need for analgesics. Pain intensity depends on the tumor growth, your general condition and physical strength. As your condition improves and energy returns, your pain also decreases. Mistletoe is synergistic with natural and conventional pain approaches. It is unlikely to resolve severe pain syndromes alone.

  • There is no "right" or "wrong" mistletoe preparation. The most important aspects in the selection of the mistletoe preparation is the individual constitution of the patient, type and stage of the tumor, the patients’ individual symptoms and personal situation. Considering these factors, the doctor needs to find the most suitable preparation.
